Good Health is More Than Just Taking Prescription

A practical talk on why grammar won't cure you if you don't understand the "Why"

In Cameroon, we have a common habit: we go to the hospital, pay for consultation, do tests, and then leave with a paper full of drug names we can’t even see or pronounce. Because the doctor was "too busy" or we were too shy to ask questions, we go home and start "consulting" Google (the kids are using AI more these days), our neighbors, or that person on WhatsApp selling "natural herbs." This isn't because we are ignorant. It's because there is a serious communication gap in our hospitals. Many of us leave the clinic "treated" but completely uncertain. And in health, uncertainty is dangerous.

Information is Part of the Treatment

Real healthcare isn't just about swallowing pills; it’s about clarity. You need to know what is wrong and why this specific medicine was chosen. If you don't understand the goal of the treatment, you’ll likely stop taking the drugs the moment you start feeling "small fine” or slightly irritated. That is how sickness comes back stronger.

The Trap of Mixing

We trust traditional medicine because "it’s natural." And yes, many pharmaceutical drugs are made from plants. But here is the difference: dosage and control. In the hospital, the medicine is measured. Traditional remedies are often taken in concentrated forms that your liver and kidneys might not handle well. The real danger happens when you mix both without guidance. You might be "doubling" the dose or causing a chemical fight inside your body. It’s not that the herbs are bad; it’s that nobody told you how they interact with your hospital drugs.

Stop the Guesswork

Cameroon doesn't just have a medication problem; we have a guidance problem. When you don't get enough information, you are forced to manage your health through guessing and experiments.Better health doesn't always need new machines or big buildings. It starts with better talk. For the Doctors: Explain the "why." A patient who understands is a patient who recovers. For the Patients: Don't just take the paper and leave. Ask: "Doc, what is really wrong with me? What does this medicine do? Can I take my ginger tea with this?"

The Main Takeaway

Your health shouldn't end at the pharmacy counter. Guidance is just as important as the injection or pills. Until we start making clear information a standard part of every hospital visit, people will continue to make unsafe decisions out of confusion. Don't just be a patient; be an informed one. Results speak, but understanding keeps you alive.

We’ve all been there, leaving the hospital with more questions than answers. What’s one thing you wish your doctor had explained better during your last visit?
